The Department of Education commissioned to make a ‘whiteboard’ style animation which was a unique challenge. At first we thought it would be easiest to simply film ourselves drawing on a whiteboard, we quickly realized the amount of issues this could cause. If the client wanted to change an illustration, we would have to re-shoot, which would be costly and time consuming. Instead we decided to elaborately fake the whole thing.

We photographed Tim’s hand at different points on a piece of paper, holding different pens. Then made a digital hand rig. We then drew the pictures in Photoshop and used a motion tracker to attach the hand rig. The whole project was really puzzle to figure out but it came out looking pretty authentic. Just don’t tell anyone it’s all fake! That will be our secret.
